Description of the Organisation
Reading School of Pharmacy teaches the accredited MPharm degree which enables graduates, after a satisfactory pre-registration training year, to register as members of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society and practise as pharmacists. The School also carries out research covering a wide range of pharmaceutical subjects.
Details of the project of work in relation to Chinese Medicine
In collaboration with Prof Kelvin Chan from University of Wolverhampton, who has expertise in a wide range of similar and also complementary techinques, including analysis, pharmacology and toxicology, we intend to initiate a programme of studies looking at drug interactions between herbal materials and conventional drugs.
Projected area of participation within the CUC
We can offer expertise in the analysis of herbs, quality control, pharmacology and formulation. Prof Williamson is a member of the British Pharmacopoeia Commission and Chair of the Expert Advisory Group for Herbal and Complementary Medicines to the BPC.Dr Yuling Ma has expertise in pharmacology and electrophysiology, and is a visiting Professor at the College of Phamaceutical Sciences of Zhejiang University, China.
Remarks
Reading University has large grounds, and a botanical garden which is currently being stocked with medicinal plants, including those used in TCM. We can also store seed and herbarium samples and carry out other botanical studies such as DNA bar-coding in collaboration with colleagues in the School of Plant Sciences if appropriate.
