Description of the Organisation

The Institute for Health Research and Policy was created shortly after the formation of the new university (2003). It brings together staff from Departments of Health and Human Sciences and Education. Institute members are engaged in a wide range of projects in Applied Herbal Medicine, Public Health Nutrition and, Biomedical & Molecular Science Research Units.

Details of the project of work in relation to Chinese Medicine

Standardisation of herbs used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
Identification of bioactive components in herbs used in TCM.
Isolation and quantification of pyrrolizidine alkaloids in herbs.
Development of analytical and profiling procedures of Chinese herbs and prescription.

Projected area of participation within the CUC

Developing policy and good practice with CUC members.
Promoting staff exchange that enchances a greater understanding of the processes to modernise TCM to meet the challenges of western medical practices.
Modernisation of TCM research especially in screening and profiling of TCM prescription.

Remarks

Fully committed to TCM model from the points of view of directly engaging in research and new drug concept development that will underpin future health intervention strategies. This is in line with China, EU and WHO policies for Health.
